Star Act

With Sully's, Star Act becomes an exploration of clay as a language for translating thought, sensation and experience into material form. The work begins with an intuitive relationship to the medium, allowing ideas to emerge through making rather than being fully resolved beforehand. Based in Ōtautahi, the work is strongly influenced by landscape and place - the rhythms, textures and atmosphere of the environment inform both the visual language and its quality.  Across the work, conventional approaches to form, surface and glaze are deliberately unsettled. This sense of unpredictability creates space for narratives that are not always logical or immediately resolved, but instead operate somewhere between memory, landscape and imagination.

After travelling for 5 months overseas and setting back up in the home studio (in a barn) in Albany, Tāmaki Makaurau the work varied between inspiration in SEA and Europe to the inevitable coming home - in the cold and wet of late July. The pieces were made with the intention of using intuitive technique and challenging the more conventional ones. Everything was made with more uncertainty - from the structure, to the glaze, to the dreamlike stories in my mind. That’s where I felt comfortable going.
